Although the homogeneous catalyst systems have been successfully applied in commercial practice, some intrinsic problems associated with catalyst separation remain. This has led to considerable interest in the development of a suitable heterogeneous analog. Rhodium compounds have been heterogenenized on substrates such as carbon (197), alumina (198, 199), and synthetic polymers (200). Carbonaceous materials are widely used as supports for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts. The use of carbon as a catalyst support presents many obvious advantages, mainly robustness, ease of recovery and cheapness. But, in spite of these very interesting aspects, carbon supports and materials derived from them are generally difficult to characterize spectroscopically. Consequently, the preparation of carbon-supported catalysts still lacks control at each synthetic step. [Pg.569]

The choice of the filter medium is often the most important consideration to ensure efficient operation of a filter. Its function is generally to act as a support for the filter cake, while the initial layers of cake provide the actual filter. The filter medium should be selected primarily on the basis of its ability to retain solids without binding. It should be mechanically strong and corrosion resistant, and should offer as little resistance as possible to the flow of the filtrate. The media are made from widely different materials such as cotton, wool, linen, nylon, jute, silk, glass fiber, porous carbon, metals, rayon and other synthetics, and miscellaneous materials like porous rubber. Cotton fabrics are most commonly used because they are available in a wide variety of weaves, and are cheap. [Pg.213]

By hydrolysis under very mild alkaline conditions (with a boiling suspension of barium carbonate), ribonucleic acids have been shown to yield small quantities of cyclic phosphates as well as the normal nucleotides.96 These materials were identical electrophoretically with synthetic cyclic phosphates and were readily hydrolyzed to mixtures of 2- and 3-phosphates. Their formation in this way constitutes strong support for Brown and Todd s theory. The precise way in which the alkaline hydrolysis of the polynucleotide occurs has been studied using isotopically labeled water, and the results are in agreement202 with the scheme outlined above. [Pg.322]
