Carbon monoxide coma caused

The following factors have been suggested as alternatives to consider when presented with a potential case of exposure to carbon monoxide diabetic ketoacidosis, hypothyroidism and myxedema coma, labyrinthitis, and lactic acidosis toxic exposures resulting in methemoglobinemia ingestion of alcohols or narcotics and diseases that cause gastroenteritis, encephalitis, meningitis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. [Pg.260]

Caibon monoxide (CO) is another compound formed between carbon and oxygen. Carbon monoxide is a very toxic gas produced when something burns in a limited amount of air. Carbon monoxide is always formed when gasoline burns in the engine of an automobile and is a common part of air pollution. Old heating units can produce carbon monoxide. This colorless and odorless gas can cause headaches, illness, coma, or even death. [Pg.110]

Effects Carbon monoxide causes tissue hypoxia. Headache is one of the first symptoms, followed by confusion, decreased visual acuity, tachycardia, syncope, coma, convulsions, and death. Collapse and syncope occur when approximately 40% of hemoglobin has been converted to carboxyhemoglobin. These adverse effects may be aggravated by high ambient temperature and high altitude. [Pg.505]
