Figure 4-18 compares maximum permissible design stresses for British, German and U.S. carbon-manganese steels about 70 psi ultimate strength. The disparity that existed a few years ago has disappeared. It must be remembered, however, that BS 1515 and ASME Section VIII Division 2 are more exacting and costly than the AD-Merk-blatter Code. 

Fine-grain, carbon-manganese steels of the same type and with identical properties are standardized in France and Italy — A52 and 20 M5, respectively. The Swedish and British equivalents have somewhat lower yield strengths, and in these countries there is more interest in niobium-treated, fine-grain, high-strength steel.

For values of this parameter, F, up to 115, a steel is graded carbon steels . For values from 116-145 the steel is graded carbon-manganese steels and examples can be found in Table 4.3. For these two grades the relationship between carbon content and expected HAZ hardness is given in Fig. 4.7, and its subsequent use to establish minimum preheat, interpass, and postheat temperatures is exactly as described previously. 

Contrary to corrosion in most natural environments, i.e. imder O2 reduction, CO2 corrosion is considerably affected by relatively small amounts of alloying elements. As shown in Table 10.2, the effect of alloying steel for a gas/condensate well withNi and Cr is strong. Alloyed steels have therefore been used sometimes in production tubing instead of carbon-manganese steel, which was commonly used previously.
