Vertically aligned MWCNTs and SWCNTs can be produced through template synthesis methods by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of a gaseous hydrocarbon (e.g., acetylene or ethylene) precursor on metal-coated surfaces " or within porous membranes " or through covalent, electrostatic, or metal-assisted assembly on surfaces. - " Electrodes composed of vertically aligned CNTs offer signal enhancement and improved electron-transfer kinetics compared to many types of electrodes modified with randomly oriented CNTs. - - - For example, carbon-fiber microdisks modified with vertically aligned SWCNTs (often called SWCNT forests ) exhibited over 30 times... [Pg.480]

Carbon microelectrodes decorated with enzyme were prepared with two different methods (Horrocks et al. 1993). Type A electrode (Fig. 3.15a) was prepared by heat sealing carbon fibers, with diameter of 11 or 8 p,m, in 2-mm outer diameter (OD) Pyrex capillaries. The resulting tip geometry was an inlaid microdisk electrode. The carbon microdisk was then coated with the electrically wired enzyme by soaking the... [Pg.82]

There are various ways of constructing ultramicroelectrodes. See Ref. 14. A typical construction is shown in Figure 15.6. The microdisk is the electrode. Electrodes are typically made from carbon fiber, and they can be used for electrooxidation measurements at positive potentials in various microenvironments. An example is the detection of neurotransmitter release in the extracellular space of the brain. [See T. Edmonds, AnaL Chim. Acta, 175 (1985) 1, for a review of various electroanalytical applications of carbon fiber electrodes.] These electrodes generate currents that are only a few nanoamperes, and sensitive potentiostats are required for measurements. [Pg.454]
