Biofuels are combusted in the presence of 02(g) to produce 002(g), H20(g), and eneigy in the form of heat, much as hydrocarbon fuels do. Because 002(g) is 3 product, the use of biofuels is part of the international debate about carbon dioxide and climate change. We will discuss this issue further in Chapter 18.

Information on the content of carbon dioxide and methane in air bubbles contained in ice kerns reflects the important role of these minor gas constituents (MGCs) in climate formation, but it is still unclear what took place first change in temperature or in MGC content. For instance, it was recently shown that during four interglacial periods, changes in temperature in the Antarctic took place about 4,000 years before the changes in C02 concentration. 

The use of fossil fuels to meet variable electrical demands may be limited in the future because of concerns about the price of natural gas and climate change. With any deep reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide emissions will likely be limited to transportation, consumer products and other mobile applications - not stationary applications such as peak power production. While carbon dioxide from fossil power plants may be sequestered underground, such fossil power plants are likely to be uneconomic for the production of intermediate and peak electricity because of their high capital costs (MIT, 2007) and the difficulties in operating such plants with variable output.
