Individual carbohydrates were separated from some of the rock samples by treatment with 0.5N sulfuric acid followed by neutralization, desalting, and paper chromatography as discussed by Palacas et al. Introduced by Partridge,9 paper chromatography of carbohydrates and related substances employs many of the methods and solvent mixtures used in resolution of amino acid mixtures on paper. In brief, the basic method27 is as follows.
