Hitherto, there have been relatively few examples where solid-state NMR and crystal structure analysis have focused on the same molecule. The method can clearly identify different phases [239] and the presence of different molecules in the same phase, as in the crystal structure of lactulose, where three different configurational isomers could be identified [240]. In another carbohydrate, the presence of two symmetry-independent molecules in the crystal structure could be clearly observed by the 13C-CP-MAS spectra of a powdered sample [241].
