The chemistry of iron-group carbides has been extensively studied. Among iron derivatives, the species Fe5(CO)i5C and [Fe6(CO)i6C] are specially relevant. As shown in the sequence of reactions illustrated in Fig. 3.11, these compounds can be prepared from Fe(CO)5 and [Fe(CO)4]. In the same scheme several reactions involving carbido-iron clusters are described. As observed, a number of other encapsulated as well as butterfly species may be prepared from both the hexa and pentairon carbide mentioned above. [Pg.189]
