Drugs are administrated by intravenous routes or ex-travascular routes including oral, sublingual, subcutaneous, intramuscular, rectal (by enema or suppository), and transdermal. Available dosage forms include suspensions, immediate-release capsules or tablets, sustained-release capsules or tablets, and enteric-coated capsules or tablets that resist dissolution in the acidic pfi of the stomach.

The sustained- and controlled-release dosage forms allow for twice-a-day dosing. The sustained-release capsule can be opened and sprinkled on food. 

Sustained release - Do not use for initial therapy. Once patients are stabilized on conventional dosage forms, they may be switched to sustained release capsules on a milligram per milligram of total daily dose basis. Administer as a single dose after breakfast or in 2 divided doses 12 hours apart. 

Time Release/Sustained Release Capsules It is a useful solid dosage form of drug, where the particles of the drug dissolve at different time intervals. 

Initially, the dose given is very low, then a blood sample is taken, and the dosage is increased gradually until the desired concentration is reached. When therapy is initiated, blood samples are taken every three or four days, then once a week, progressing to every two weeks, once a month, then perhaps every three or four months. In order to maintain the desired level, the medication is usually taken periodically throughout the day, depending upon the dosage. Slow-release and sustained-release tablets and capsules have been developed that make the administration of lithium medication easier. It is sometimes taken in liquid form as well. 

The application for a licence for general use (marketing application) should include a draft Summary of Product Characteristics for prescribers. A Patient Information Leaflet must be submitted. These should include information on the form of the product (e.g. tablet, capsule, sustained-release, liquid), its uses, dosage (adults, children, elderly where appropriate), contraindications (strong recommendation), warnings and precautions (less strong), side-effects/ adverse reactions, overdose and how to treat it. 

Mannitol has also been used to prevent thickening in aqueous antacid suspensions of aluminum hydroxide (<7% w/v). It has been suggested as a plasticizer in soft-gelatin capsules, as a component of sustained-release tablet formula-tions, and as a carrier in dry powder inhalers. It is also used as a diluent in rapidly dispersing oral dosage forms.
