An important assessment principle is that skills should be developed over time, so students may demonstrate improvement after receiving feedback. Design is one such skill, as are oral presentations, written reports, teamwork, and so on. The capstone design class usually requires all of these experiences. It is difficult to argue that students have developed any of these skills if they have only one such experience while an undergraduate. Therefore, it is recommended that students receive multiple experiences to develop these skills, with feedback after each experience. One way to do this is by integrating these e5q>eriences throughout the curriculum. If this is not possible, then it is su ested that there be multiple experiences with feedback in the capstone experience. 

The second project in each pair IProjects 2. 4, and 6) is more like the typical design project that is covered in the senior capstone design course. Here, the student (or group of students) should be familiar with the information given in Sections 1. 2, and 2. and the guidelines for written reports given in Chapter 27 (on this CD). 

The School of Engineering is proud of the way the Design Sequence and the Capstone Design develops the design capabilities of our students. However, there are challenges and areas for improvement. In Capstone Design, there are few areas... 

Each university has a local C-DEN committee who ties into the larger network. In Guelph, the committee comprises the design sequence instructors, which provides an ideal format for the C-DEN initiative to positively influence the courses in the design sequence and specifically the Capstone Design course.
