CAOLD File

Answers from aH of these searches contain CAS Registry Numbers. Answer sets may be combined, using the Boolean operators AND, OR, or NOT, with other answer sets or with text terms, such as names or molecular formulas. Any answer set also may be used to define subsets of the file for subsequent stmcture searching. Answer sets of up to 10,000 Registry Numbers from any type of search in this file may also be used as search terms in other files, such as the CA or CAOLD files (53). 

In the fields Keywords and Index Terms, certain default terms and abbreviations are used and they must be employed in a query. A complete list of these abbreviations is available in the manual called The CA, CApreviews, CAOLD File Database Description. 

A list of country codes and formats of patent numbers is joined in the appendix of the manual The CA, CApreviews, CAOLD Files Database Description. 

In the Formula Index, included by Chemical Abstracts Service for creating CAOLD, substances with more than 50 documents have only a reference to the Substance Index (Sects. 2.1.3.3 and 2.5). This means that common compounds are often not included in the CAOLD file. 

Xhere is also a file called CAOLD that has some papers earlier than 1967. 

The literature before 1967 is included retrospectively in the database CAOLD, which, in the meantime, contains 700,000 references to 1.4 million substances, which were mentioned before 1967, and 152.000 references to patents. For this database Chemical Abstracts Service scans bit by bit the Formula Index of the Sixth (1957-1961) and the Seventh (1962-1966) Collective Period. Therefore only substance references are contained in this database with no text information or even abstracts. However, cross-references to patents are marked with P. Using this database you have to consider that the chemical nomenclature in those days was quite different to the names in use today. Therefore an online search in CAOLD should be proceded by a search in the Registry File (Sect. 7.6) and then continued with the appropriate CAS Registry Number in CAOLD.

The Locator field (LC) in the Registry File shows whether the database CAOLD provides a certain document for a compound or not. Crossfile searches can be carried out following the explanations in Sect. 7.1.1. Crosssearching fi-om the Registry File to CAOLD is possible by means of the Registry Number only, because the database does not contain any text information. Subsequently, the source has to be retrieved from the printed Chemical Abstracts.
