At the tested daily dose of 50 mg, fluconazole appears to be slightly less active against dermatophytes. The substance is used mainly to treat vaginal candidosis (a single capsule of 150 mg) and oral and esophageal candidosis (50 mg od for 14 d). In a number of countries, ie, England, the maximal period of treatment is 14 d.

Miconazole is primarily used externally for Candida and dermatophyte infections of the skin and vaginal candidosis as well as for acute internal mycoses. Synonyms of this drag are acnidazil, dactar, dermonistate, and others.

To achieve more effective treatment of vaginal candidosis, ketoconazole was formulated in bioadhesive tablets that increase the time of contact of drug with the vaginal mucosa and thus its therapeutic effect [77]. The tablets were based on sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC), polyvinylpyrrolidone, or HPMC.

Nystatin was discovered in 1950 and exhibits the same mode of action as amphotericin B but tends to be of lower solubility, which has restricted its use to the treatment of topical infections. While nystatin was effective for the treatment of conditions such as oral and vaginal candidosis its use has been overtaken by the introduction of azole antifungal drugs. 

Isoconazole. Tike econazole, both the chemical structure and the clinical indications of this imidazole derivative (Fig. 2, 7c) closely resemble those of miconazole. It is available as a vaginal tablet (300 mg isoconazole nitrate per tablet). In some countries isoconazole [27523-40-6] is also available as a cream for dermatological use and as a cream and ovules for treatment of vaginal candidosis. 

Skin A 34-year-old previously healthy woman developed a fixed drug eruption that was attributed to fluconazole [14 ]. The patient had ingested 150 mg fluconazole for vaginal candidosis and 15 min after an erythema with a burning sensation on both elbows developed.
