Cancer patient care problems

Recurrence of tumors after curative surgery is a life-threatening event for cancer patients, and the prevention of such recurrence is one of the most important problems to be resolved at the clinical level. The major cause of recurrence after curative resection in cancer patients is considered to be free tumor cells in the body fluid and invisible micrometastases in the distant organs which were already present at the time of removal of the primary neoplasm or had been shed from the primary tumor during surgical manipulation. To prevent recurrence and improve survival rates of cancer patients after curative resection, careful detection and subsequent chemotherapy for micrometastasis may be promising. To date, however, conventional adjuvant... [Pg.87]

Many cancer patients have disorders in the oral cavity after radiation or chemotherapy. They form a typical group that could benefit by care, attention and customised pharmacy preparations. Optimal oral hygiene can help to prevent problems in these patients. [Pg.132]

Patient databases with genetic profiles, e.g. for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, etc. may play an important role in the future for individual health care, by integrating personal genetic profile into diagnosis, despite obvious ethical problems. The goal is to analyse a patient s individual genetic profile and compare it with a collection of reference profiles and other related information. This may improve individual diagnosis, prophylaxis, and therapy. [Pg.263]

Based on the information presented, create a care plan for this patient s breast cancer. Your plan should include (1) a statement of the drug-related and non-drug-related needs and/or problems, (2) the goals of therapy, (3) a patient-specific detailed therapeutic plan (including options for local control), and (4) a plan for follow-up to determine whether the goals have been achieved and adverse effects managed adequately. [Pg.1321]

Based on the information presented, create a care plan for this patient s colon cancer. Your plan should include (1) the patient s drug- and non-drug-related needs and problems,... [Pg.1349]

Influenza is responsible for several thousand deaths each year. Individuals over the age of 65, residents of long-term care facilities, and patients with long-term health problems (i.e., diabetes, HIV or AIDS, heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, cancer) are at highest risk for severe influenza and complications. Yearly vac-... [Pg.575]

However, perhaps the key to this problem would be careful selection of the cancer to be treated. In many cancers, the first line of treatment includes surgery to try to eliminate the initial source of neoplasia. In many patients, however, the cancer is not eliminated and later returns and metastasizes. In some cancers, this process is relatively predictable. That is the case for ovarian cancer, for example. For this reason, this may be a good candidate for initial clinical trials. Another reason it is a good candidate is because CXCR4 is the only chemokine receptor expressed in ovarian cancer [28]. [Pg.173]
