2- Buten-2-ol, acetate

Methyl- 1,3-cyclopentanedione is a key intermediate for the total synthesis of steroids.2 A number of methods have been described for its preparation, among them the condensation of succinic acid with propionyl chloride,3 and that of succinic anhydride with 2-buten-2-ol acetate,4 both in the presence of aluminum chloride. It has also been obtained from 3-methylcyclopentane-1,2,4-trione by catalytic hydrogenation5 and Wolff-Kishner reduction 6 The base-promoted cyclization of 4-oxohexanoic acid ethyl ester and diethyl propionylsuccinate with tertiary alkoxides was first reported by Bucourt.7 The present cyclization process provides an experimentally simple route to 2-methyl-1,3-cyclopentanedione. Using the same procedure, 4-oxoheptanoic acid ethyl ester has been cyclized to give 2-ethyl-l,3-cyclopentanedione in 46% yield... [Pg.85]

The trapped product gave an immediate test with KI in acetic acid. Its infrared spectrum was similar to that of 3-butene-2-ol with major absorption peaks at 3, 8.7, 9.5, 10.3, and 10.8 microns and minor peaks at 6.3, 7.2, 7.7, 11.6, 12.4, and 12.6 microns. There was no absorption arising from carbonyl. In a 25% solution of hydroperoxide in carbon tetrachloride, the hydroperoxide proton gave rise to a broad band at 8.7 p.p.m. (referred to TMS) in the NMR spectra. [Pg.107]

In the transesterification of (7 ,.S)-secondary alcohols, the (A)-alcohol was the faster reacting enantiomer yielding the (A(-acetate in high ee and leaving (.S )-alcohol as enantiomerically pure unreacted enantiomer. Trims-4-phenyl-3-butene-2-ol 29, another substrate pocessing an allylic strain has been successfully resolved on gram-scale via lipase-catalyzed enantioselective acylation of the alcohol and hydrolysis of its acetate.57... [Pg.206]
