Bulk paramagnetic susceptibility

Firstly, Evans (1959) and Evans et al. (1971) have established that the bulk paramagnetic susceptibility for a complex of a lanthanide j affects the chemical shifts of all nuclei by a constant value 5 ulk (in ppm) which is given by eq. (1)... 

Prof. Levitt uses the term demagnetization field effect (as will we) but terms such as bulk nuclear-paramagnetic-susceptibility-induced transients, dipolar field, or bulk susceptibility effects have also been used. 

Coals contain mtmerous unshared electrons, of the order of 10 spins per gram. This gives rise to the bulk properly called paramagnetic susceptibility, the magnitude of the force exerted on a sample in a strong magnetic field. 

The diamagnetic and paramagnetic susceptibilities, and, can be obtained from measurements of ggg and gg. However, the bulk susceptibility is needed in order to determine gg, g = a,b, c, from the spectroscopically measured anisotropies (eqs (2.3 le), (2.32d)). Lacking gas phase data, bulk susceptibilities measured in the liquid state are sometimes used in order to obtain the desired information. Frequently an ab initio value for (o g 0), g = a,b, or c, is used to achieve this calibration (see eq. (2.33d)). ...
