We also list three other alloy phase types of current interest that are not treated here in detail. Quasicrystals are alloy phases partially or completely lacking translational symmetry (see Quasicrystals) they form both equilibrium and nonequilibrium alloy phases. Metallic glasses lack crystalline symmetry entirely they are always metastable and generally require gas-phase deposition or rapid solidification to be retained, although in some cases their equilibration kinetics are so slow that they can be prepared in bulk from the melt (bulk metallic glasses). [Pg.118]

Because of their high strength and large elastic deformation, bulk metallic glasses are emerging as structural materials for MEMS and other devices. As the name suggests, these metal alloys have no inherent crystalline structure, and exhibit decidedly different indentation... [Pg.1845]

Bulk metallic glasses were prepared in the Pd-Ni-P and Pd-Cu-P systems using a fluxing technique. The formation of bulk amorphous Pd-Cu-P alloys was reported here for the first time. For both alloy systems, bulk glass formation requires maintaining the phosphorus content near 20 at.%. In the Pd-Ni-P system, lO-mm diameter amorphous PdxNigo-xP 20 rods can be formed for 25 x < 60. In the Pd-Cu-P system, 7-mm diameter amorphous Pd Cugg. xPzo rods can be produced for 40 < x 60. [Pg.298]
