Building control approval

In the U.S., there are local, state, and federal laws regulating health, safety, and the environment. The laws that address the area of pollution control also cover health and safety, toxic substances, noise, transportation, and building site approval.

The requirements in relation to contamination apply not only to buildings but also the siurounding land. Therefore there is a need for approved building control inspectors to consider the effects of gas on gardens (e.g. sheds, vegetation, the effect of digging ponds etc.)... 

As the building has such a key role to play in relation to fire safety and risk management it is imperative that a knowledge of the Building Regulations Approved Documents, British Standards and official guidance is included within any course of study. Each of these areas is covered within this chapter and will have a significant impact on the preventive and protective control measures identified within a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment (see Chapter 14).

Any work to be undertaken by a firm or individual who is not registered under an approved competent person scheme must be notified to the Local Authority Building Control Body before work commences. That is, work that involves ... 

One way to achieve new installation control is to build and test prototype installations and allow the use of only replicates of an approved prototype. This is the method used in the United States for the control of emissions from new automobiles (Table 25-2). 

Standards Most buildings have never been subjected to thorough engineering analyses. Traditional precedent and judgment as reviewed under Codes have (logically) controlled the standards. In fact if wood had never been used, it would be difficult to approve (burns, rots, etc.) of course it is ridiculous to assume that wood would not be approved. 

To protect the control room area from incidents occurring in the support areas, the control room area should be separated from the support areas by minimum 1-hour fire-rated partition walls. All penetrations of the walls, floors, ceilings, and roof for cables, etc. should be closed with an approved sealant having a fire resistance rating of at least one-hour. Approved y4-hour rated (Class B) fire doors equipped with self-closing devices should be installed on all openings between the control room and other portions of the building.
