A more recent study by Mirza and Chivers (2001) found that in one of two experiments brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis) avoided conspecific alarm cues significantly more than an unfamiliar heterospecific cue (swordtail) under natural conditions. As well as adding an unfamiliar heterospecific control, this was the first study to document a behavioral response of a salmonid to damage-released alarm cues in the wild.
