Cleavage of the bromophenyl group is achieved with Cu(OAc)2 in Pyr, H2O. The 2-chlorophenyl group is stable to these conditions. ...

Di-p-chlorophenyl diselenide, (C6H4Cl)2Se2, occurs when p-chloroselenophenol oxidises in the air.1 It forms yellow needles, M.pt. 85° to 86° C. Di-p-bromophenyl diselenide separates from alcohol in yellow needles, M.pt. 107° to 108° C. 

A solution of 14.94 g of l-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-bromophenyl)-2-(phthalimido)ethane and 4.5 g cuprous chloride in 300 mL anhydrous DMF was heated for 5 h at reflux. The cooled mixture was poured into 20 mL H20 that contained 13 g hydrated ferric chloride and 3 mL concentrated HC1. The mixture was maintained at about 70 °C for 20 min, and then extracted with CH2C12. After washing the pooled organic extracts with dilute HC1 and drying with anhydrous MgS04, the volatiles were removed under vacuum to provide a solid residue. This was recrystallized from EtOH to provide 12.18 g of l-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-chlorophenyl)-2-(phthalimido)ethane as yellow needles that had a mp of 138-140 °C. Anal. (C. CINOJ C,H,N,C1.

A transient intermediate has been observed which decays with k = 12.6 s-1 in a first-order process. In view of its long lifetime the transient is supposed to be the cyclohexadienyl radical. A similar reaction mechanism had earlier been proposed for the photochemical cyclization of 5-(2-chlorophenyl)-1,3-diphenyl-1,2,4[1 //]-triazole561. Intramolecular aryl-aryl coupling has also been described for A2-l,2,4-triazol-5(l//)-one derivatives containing an 0-bromophenyl and a heteroaryl substituent in vicinal positions562.
