A mixture of o-phenylenediamine (1 1 mmol) and ketone (2 2.2 mmol) was well stirred with (bromodimethyl) sulfonium bromide (10 mol%) at room temperature for 1 h so as to complete the reaction as monitored by TLC. The reaction mixture was then quenched with 5 mL of water and extracted with EtOAc (3x5 mL). The extract was concentrated and the residue was subjected to column chromatography over silica gel using EtOAc-hexane (1 4) as eluent to afford pure 1,5-benzodiazepine (3).
