Bridge bearing pads, where vulcanised rubber blocks are assembled in a sandwich construction between a series of metal pieces and then the PV bonding technique is applied. 

Elastomers are used in many critical service applications that require long, trouble-free life such as seals, gaskets, bridge-bearing pads, tires, and medical components. The ability to estimate long-term durability or the time to failure for elastomer materials and components presents a challenge to both scientists and technologists that work with these materials. 

As a result of its very low gas permeability, butyl rubber is used predominantly in the inner tubes of tires and inner liners for tubeless tires. It is used for bearings required to operate without lubricant and as static bearing pads for bridge expansion joints.
