The addition of ammonia to excess methyl acrylate (a linear monomer), followed by amidation with excess ethylenediamine afforded the resultant cascade molecule, and thus Tomalia [37] created the commercially available PAMAM starburst series of dendrimers (2, Fig. 2). Related core molecules such as ethylenediamine and aminoalcohols and other functionalizable groups such as thiol moieties were used to prepare similar dendrimers [38]. This methodology is applicable to most primary amines, resulting in a 1 —> 2 branching pattern. Recently, examples of related Si-, [39] P-, [40] and metallo systems [41], which follow this linear monomer protocol have been reported. [Pg.32]

In the present study the bronchial morphometry of Yeh and Schum (1980) is utilized instead of the Weibel model. This is a more accurate description of the bronchial airway lengths, diameters and branching pattern. It does not assume dichotomous branching and therefore does not suffer from the problem of the artificially high surface area leading to low alpha dose in the more distal airways common to other models of the human airways. [Pg.423]

Early reports on imipramine noted that some patients developed first-degree heart block, as well as other bundle branch patterns, but it took almost 15 years to clarify that these conduction delays were the only adverse effects at therapeutic plasma concentrations. It is now well documented that increased PR, QRS, or QT intervals occur with all standard TCAs, at or slightly above their therapeutic plasma levels. [Pg.146]

One of the most rapidly advancing areas in biochemistry is that concerned with the structure and metabolism of oligosaccharides that are covalently attached to proteins (in glycoproteins) and lipids (in glycolipids). The carbohydrates in these complexes vary in composition, in the way they are linked, their branching patterns and in the sugars that terminate each branch. [Pg.359]

Cytochrome and insulin are not unique in their opposition to the Darwinian model of genealogy. Relaxin, a hormone of parturition in placental mammals, shows clearly that molecular structures and branching patterns do not connect. When the sequence data of all known relaxins are reviewed, several startling observations could be made. The hormone differs by about 55% in animals of purportedly... [Pg.88]

Methylation- or combined methylation-ethylation reactions were used for structure analysis of polysaccharides. The alkylation of dextran can be applied to the investigation of the branching pattern, i.e. the number and length of side chains (Sect. 2.2) [22,23]. The methylation is carried out in liquid ammonia with sodium iodide and methyl iodide, yielding products that are soluble in chloroform and tetrachloroethane [257]. [Pg.245]
