Chiefly remembered for his reinstatement of Avogadro s hypothesis and his subsequent reform of atomic weights was the Italian chemist Stanislao Cannizzaro. His life and (especially) his work have been commemorated in a book by John Bradley, appearing in German86 and English87 editions. There have also been three volumes of Cannizzaro correspondence, edited by L. Paoloni88 90... [Pg.8]

The development work was funded in part by National Science Foundation (NSF) CCLI-EMD 0127541. The development of the Physical Chemistry in Practice DVD would not have been possible without the efforts by the following Peggy O Neill-Jones, Beatriz Cisneros, Joseph Farris, and Justin Heisler. The authors would also like to thank the researchers who graciously allowed us into their laboratories William Bradley, Thomas C. Brunold, Carlos Bustamante, Eric Cornell, Gerard Cote, Sossina Haile, Bill Hinsberg, Frances Houle, Stephen Leone, John D. Roberts, and Richard Schwenz. [Pg.265]

Cardwell, From Watt to Clausius, pp. 220-1 is convinced that Clapeyron had encountered the indicator diagram but is not sure how. John Farey, as previously noted, had seen an indicator diagram being taken in Russia in 1819. It is possible that the same thing happened to Clapeyron on whose presence and activities in Russia at this time see M. Bradley, Franco-Russian Engineering Links The Careers of Tame and Clapeyron, 1820-1830, Annals of Science, 38 (1981), pp. 291-312. [Pg.212]

As editors, we would like to thank our contributors for their expertise, their dedication, and their vision. We would like to thank and acknowledge the work and counsel of our colleague Robert Bell, MD, MRPharmS, who helped us greatly during the early part of this project. We would also like to thank and acknowledge the enormous help, encouragement, and patience of the team at John Wiley Sons, Inc., UK, with whom we have worked closely over these past few years, among whom we have particularly stressed ( ) Michael Davis, Deborah Reece, Hannah Bradley, Lewis Derrick, and Hilary Rowe. [Pg.771]

We would again like to thank the team at John Wiley and Sons, Inc., Chichester (UK). Hannah Bradley got this second edition started, but then went off on a tour around the world the editors strenuously deny that they are the reason why. Lucy Sayer and Juliet Booker have since piloted the ship to the dock-side, successfully cajoling us into getting this edition done before its second decade. Not least, we would like to thank you, the reader, for your continued support and suggestions. So here is our second edition, it is more than a simple update, and it is even less US-centric than before. [Pg.773]
