Boundary layers transition

At Re = 20, Cn increased sharply to pass through a maximum of approximately 0.22 at Re = 40, declining to be very small for Re > 150. Large normal drag is probably related to wake development, and similar effects may be expected whenever the flow pattern changes markedly with Re. In the critical range, lateral acceleration would tend to produce asymmetric boundary layer transition, so that significant lift can be anticipated. 

Similar boundary layers (transition regions) exist for temperature as well as species concentrations.

He also was a member of the Boundary Layer Transition Study Group, US Air Force, from 1970 to 1982. Klebanoff was a member of the editorial board of the journal Physics of Fluids from 1970 to 1973. He was the recipient of the 1945 Naval Ordnance Award, and the 1975 Gold Medal from the US Department of Commerce. He further was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science AAAS, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics AIAA, and member of the Washington Academy of Sciences.

This parameter / is quite important. Such factors as boundary-layer transition, separation, and heat- and mass-transfer coefficients depend upon the intensity of turbulence. Simulation of turbulent flows in testing of models requires that the Reynolds number and the intensity of turbulence be the same. One method used to measure intensity of turbulence is to utilize a hot-wire anemometer.
