Boundary layer differences, blood

The values of the P 02(f) corresponding to the decreasing blood 02 concentration must also be ascertained for the construction of the 02 dissociation curve. This is accomplished using the method described previously involving the comparison of the P b<>,( ) with known values of P 02 and P WOj. The calibration derived from the MTE is used to correct for the blood-water boundary layer differences. 

Hollow fiber BOs use hydrophobic membranes. In most designs, the blood flows outside and across the fibers. Consequently, the fibers help dismpt the blood side concentration boundary layer. Hollow fiber and flat sheet BOs have almost equivalent hemocompatibility and gas exchange performance.
