The europium-boron-carbon phase diagram. The ternary system Eu-B-C has been studied, with special emphasis on the technologically important sections EuBg-C and EUB6-B4C (Schwetz et al. 1979). Samples were synthesized from the pure elements at 1500°C in sealed molybdenum capsules and annealed for 20 h. The X-ray diffraction pattern of EUB2C2 has been indexed on the basis of a tetragonal unit cell with a = 3.77 A and c = 4.03 A. [Pg.117]

Boron carbide is rhombohedral (a = 5.163 A a = 65.59°). The stoichiometric composition of boron carbide is Bi3C2(B6.5C), so that B4C is a carbon-saturated solid solution.
