The courses at the LSMW included theoretical and practical chemistry, and the Department of Chemistry was staffed by a [Pg.158]

In 1891, Boole was appointed as a Demonstrator in Chemistry at the LSMW under Charles William Heaton.02 Veiy shortly after, due to Heaton s ill health, she was called upon to take over his duties and on his resignation in 1893, she was formally appointed Lecturer. Louisa Martindale, a student at the LSMW, recalled  [Pg.159]

The chemistry laboratory, presided over by Miss Lucy Boole was a poor one. We much revered Miss Boole on account of her clever mother, a mathematician who had proved the divinity of Christ by mathematics , and of her sister who had written the Gadfly and then married a Nihilist.63 [Pg.159]

The following year, Boole was elected as the first woman Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry. Unfortunately, in 1897, deteriorating health resulted in her submitting her resignation however, to keep her, the Council of the School divided the duties of the position and appointed Boole as Teacher of Practical Chemistry. She held this position at the time of her death on 5 December 1904 at the age of 42.64 [Pg.159]

BOOL, boolean reduction module, generates minimal cutsets by combining minimal cutsets, generated by the FTA module, with a Boolean algorithm. BOOL automatically handles of success paths and truncates by probability or order. [Pg.142]

Computer science and algebra The symbolic system of mathematical logic called Boolean algebra represents relationships between entities either ideas or objects. George Boole of England formulated the basic rules of the system in 1847. The Boolean algebra eventually became a cornerstone of computer science. [Pg.633]

In binary algebra [Boolean, after George Boole, British mathematician (1815-1864)1 the indices 0,1.2,.7 are represented by 000. 001. 010, Oil. 100, 101. HO, and 111. respectively. The reversal of these binary numbers yields the values of m in the order indicated in... [Pg.384]

Charles Hinton studied mathematics at Oxford, married Mary Boole (one of the daughters of famous logician Geoge Boole), and then moved to the United States after being convicted of bigamy. He taught mathematics at Princeton University and the University of Minnesota. In 1907, Hinton published An Episode of Flatland (a work more scientific than Abbott s Flatland) in which 2-D creatures resided on the surface of a circular world called Astria. Gravity behaves as it does in our world, except that on the plane its force varies inversely with distance instead of with the square of distance. [Pg.97]

The oil of bricks is described in a Munich manuscript of the Boole of Fires (written 1438 A. D.) as made by pounding up bricks into small pieces, soaking in olive oil and distilling, thus producing an oily product modified by cracking. Berthelot, op. cit., I, p. 102. [Pg.197]
