Bonding, electron-deficient elements

The deshielding of the vinylic carbon atoms in the norbornyl cations 13, 55-57, 62 and 77 compared to the precursor compounds was taken as evidence for the intramolecular coordination of the C=C double bond to the electron-deficient element atom." ° This high-frequency shift, is largest for the silanorbornyl... [Pg.188]

The high electrophilicity of the positively charged element can be modified by intramolecular donation from remote donor substituents. This interaction leads to solvent-free cations with coordination numbers for the positively charged element > 3 and to a considerable electron transfer from the donor group to the element. Frequently used donor substituents utilize heteroatoms with lone pairs (e.g. amino, hydrazino, methoxy, carboxy, phosphino, etc.), in many cases in combination with pincer-type topology of the ligand, for the stabilization of the cationic center. These strongly stabilized cations are beyond the scope of this review and instead we will concentrate on few examples where we have weak donors such as CC multiple bonds, which stabilize the electron-deficient element atom. [Pg.196]

Qualitative models of reactivity and quantum mechanical calculations of reaction paths both indicate an angular approach of the attacking nucleophile to the first-row sp -hybridized electrophilic centers M at intermediate and reactive distances, 29. The geometry of 29 is also characteristic for the case of nucleophilic addition to electron-deficient centers of main-group 12 and 13 elements. By contrast, a linear arrangement 30 of making and breaking bonds is required for sp -hybridized first-row centers (C, N, O)... [Pg.191]

Boron forms perhaps the most extraordinary structures of all the elements. It has a high ionization energy and is a metalloid that forms covalent bonds, like its diagonal neighbor silicon. However, because it has only three electrons in its valence shell and has a small atomic radius, it tends to form compounds that have incomplete octets (Section 2.11) or are electron deficient (Section 3.8). These unusual bonding characteristics lead to the remarkable properties that have made boron an essential element of modern technology and, in particular, nan otechn ol ogy. [Pg.718]

For low values of the valence electron concentration (VEC< 4 for main group elements), covalent 2c2e bonds are not sufficient to overcome the electron deficiency. We have the case of electron-deficient compounds . For these, relief comes from multicenter bonds. In a three-center two-electron bond (3c2e) three atoms share an electron pair. An even larger number of atoms can share one electron pair. With increasing numbers of... [Pg.138]
