Block engineering model

The first interferometer incorporating an air-bearing drive was the Block Engineering Model 296. This interferometer was the one used in the first commercial mid-infrared FT-IR spectrometer designed for laboratory use, the Digilab FTS-14 [4]. This instrument was introduced in 1969 and was followed a few years later by the Model 7199 spectrometer made by Nicolet Analytical Instruments which also featured an air-bearing drive. Both of these early FT-IR spectrometers were too large to be placed on a lab bench and the compressor was mounted inside the instrument s cabinetry. Over the next 10 or 15 years, the optics and electronics of FT-IR spectrometers became far more compact and bench-top instruments became commonplace. Since compressors are noisy and occupy too much bench space. [Pg.100]

Why does the metal in a car s engine block retain its shape as you drive down the road while the fuel in the car s gas tank conforms to the shape of the tank What s happening on the submicroscopic level when solid metal is melted to a liquid, and why can molten metal take the shape of a mold used to form an engine block Our model will help us to answer these questions. [Pg.34]

These PPA heat resistant, high performance plastics have been used successful in different applications such the auto engine block. BP Amoco reports that after seven years and 85,000 miles of actual vehicle use, a Dodge Neon 2.0 liter thermostat housing molded from BP s PPA (polyphthalamide) showed no measurable dimensional variations, no surface degradation, and no decline in the performance of the plastic. In 1994, BP model A-113 3 HS (a 33wt% glass-filled, heat-... [Pg.95]
