Other degradation products of the cytosine moiety were isolated and characterized. These include 5-hydroxy-2 -deoxycytidine (5-OHdCyd) (22) and 5-hydroxy-2 -deoxyuridine (5-OHdUrd) (23) that are produced from dehydration reactions of 5,6-dihydroxy-5,6-dihydro-2 -deoxycytidine (20) and 5,6-dihydroxy-5,6-dihydro-2 -deoxyuridine (21), respectively. MQ-photosen-sitized oxidation of dCyd also results in the formation of six minor nucleoside photoproducts, which include the two trans diastereomers of AT-(2-de-oxy-/j-D-eryf/iro-pentofuranosyl)-l-carbamoyl-4 5-dihydroxy-imidazolidin-2-one, h/1-(2-deoxy-J8-D-crythro-pentofuranosyl)-N4-ureidocarboxylic acid and the a and [5 anomers of N-(2-deoxy-D-eryfhro-pentosyl)-biuret [32, 53]. In contrast, formation of the latter compounds predominates in OH radical-mediated oxidation of the pyrimidine ring of dCyd, which involves preferential addition of OH radicals at C-5 followed by intramolecular cyclization of 6-hydroperoxy-5-hydroxy-5,6-dihydro-2 -deoxycytidine and subsequent generation of the 4,6-endoperoxides [53]. [Pg.18]

Isocyanate Crosslinkers. A wide variety of both aromatic and aliphatic Isocyanate crosslinkers are used in coatings (4). Aliphatic isocyanates are used when external durability is required. The isocyanate crosslinker studied in this work is the biuret of hexamethylene diisocyanate (Figure 1). Although resins based on triisocyanurates have been claimed to be superior in durability (,22.) > biuret based triisocyanates are more commonly used. Urethane coatings are generally formulated with a ratio of isocyanate to hydroxy of around 1 1. [Pg.78]

Diisocyanates are an important class of chemicals of commercial interest, which are frequently used in the manufacture of indoor materials. such as adhesives, coatings, foams and rubbers (Ulrich, 1989). In some types of particle board, the diisocyanates have replaced formaldehyde. Isocyanates are characterized by the electrophilic -N=C=0 group, which can easily react with molecules containing hydroxy groups, such as water or alcohols. On hydrolysis with water, primary amines are formed, while a reaction with alcohols leads to carbamates (urethanes). Polyurethane (PUR) products are then obtained from a polyaddition of diisocyanate and diol components. Compounds commonly used in industrial surface technology are 4,4 -diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The diisocyanate monomers are known as respiratory sensitizers and cause irritation of eyes, skin and mucous membrane. Therefore, polyisocyanates such as HDI-biuret and HDI-isocyanurate with a monomer content <0.5 % are used for industrial applications, and isocyanate monomers will not achieve high concentrations in ambient air. Nevertheless, it is desirable to measure even trace emissions from materials in private dwellings. [Pg.215]

As mentioned in Section 8.4.3.1., the majority of hydroxy groups in a polyether triol are secondary groups and are comparatively unreactive towards isocyanates. It is therefore necessary to select a catalyst which favours the formation of urethane links relatively more than the formation of gas by the reaction of isocyanate and water. Tin compounds (e.g., stannous octoate and dibutyltin dilaurate) are particularly effective in this respect (cf.. Table 14.3) and are very widely used. In addition to the primary isocyanate-polyol and isocyanate-water reactions, several secondary reactions occur during the preparation of foam. As shown in Section 14.4, the final product may contain allophanate, biuret, isocyanurate and uretidione links. It will be appreciated that in a polymeric system, which is based on a diisocyanate, all of these links (except uretidione) represent points of branching or cross-linking. These secondary reactions are particularly favoured by tertiary amines (e.g., triethylenediamine and 4-dimethylaminopyridine) and these catalysts therefore contribute to the final cross-linking of the foam and hence to the achievement of, for example, a low compression set.
