Laboratory Response Network (LRN)—A network of labs developed by the CDC, APHL, and FBI for the express purpose of dealing with bioterrorism threats, including pathogens and some biotoxins. 

In the next decade, U.S. and world demand for vaccines is expected to increase sharply, in part because of bioterrorism threats. But the vaccine industrial base has been declining for decades. Between 1966 and 1977, half of all commercial vaccine manufacturers stopped producing vaccines, and the exodus continued in the 1980s and 1990s. More than 25 companies produced vaccines for the U.S. market 30 years ago today there are only 5 (Institute of Medicine 2004). Five of the current recommended vaccines have only one producer, and the others have either two or three (Institute of Medicine, p. 5).

The regulatory focus on training under established regulations is far from the only reason to implement effective training programs. Regulations are not static. New laws are enacted, some to address new needs, such as the bioterrorism threats recognized by the... 

Practically, numerous consequent hoaxes of bioterrorism threats through powder containing post envelopes extremely proved burdensome to wide logistical systems. 

The unique properties and particular importance of smallpox virus are discussed, both as a bioterrorism threat and as a major biohazard in general. It appears to pose, potentially, a colossal menace, which ought to be intensely coped with. The issues of renewed vaccination and ongoing research are then addressed, showing the complexity related to that singular pathogen. 

The Interpol and the European Homeland Security Association pay much attention to bioterrorism threats. Interpol President Jackie Selebi recently observed that Major panic, temporary paralysis of government functions and private businesses and even civil disorder are all likely outcomes of a bioterrorism attack. In fact, bioterrorism appears particularly well suited to the small, well-informed groups. A bioterrorist s lab could well be the size of a household kitchen and the weapon built there could be smaller than a toaster, and the range of options available to terrorists will continue to grow. Furthermore, he warned of bioterror attacks on livestock or the food chain [317].

Bacteria are important biological systems and their association with disease, infection and, recently, bioterror threats, makes their detection of prime interest. Naturally, efforts were made to develop methods of detection based on the vibrational spectroscopy, owing to its high inherent specificity. SERS represents a promising tool for identification and classification of bacteria in clinical microbiology (see Sect. 7.2) or detection of biological warfare agents (see Sect. 4.4).
