Biotechnology defined

Modern biotechnology, defined as the movement and modification of genes at will, was built on discoveries in genetics and biochemistry originally made in the first half of the 20 century. Scientists learned that inherited characteristics or traits, such as hair or eye color, are passed from parents to offspring in units of inheritance called genes. You may have learned how an Austrian monk named... [Pg.2]

A fundamental requirement for obtaining a patent is defining an advance, development, or invention which is within those classes of "subject matter" which the law of the United States regards as patentable. Two classes of patentable subject matter, ie, computer software and biotechnology, are the subject of relatively new and evolving law. However, other types of subject matter rest on fairly certain ground as to patentabiUty. Examples of patents directed to various types of subject matter are described in the following. [Pg.29]

In the 1980s, advances in biotechnology had a considerable impact on steroid research. During this period, the mechanism of steroid hormone-activated gene regulation became more clearly defined. These mechanistic studies stiH receive considerable attention in the primary Hterature. [Pg.414]

Biotechnology- Use of living organisms to carry out defined physiochemical processes having industrial or other practical application. [Pg.608]

Bioanalysis may be defined as laboratory analysis of biomolecules. Biomolecules, in turn, are organic compounds with biological activity, generally important only in biological systems, or cells. Biochemistry is the study of structure and function of biomolecules. Biotechnology, a related concept, concerns the industrial applications of biochemical techniques. Thus bioanalysis, biochemistry, and biotechnology are closely related concepts, all concerned primarily with biomolecules. [Pg.465]
