The quest for nanostructures and devices based on the biomimetic premise of architectural and functional precision is intense and remains an ultimate challenge. One must ask - what new options or unique properties does the dendritic state offer to meet the needs of nanoscale science and technology The rest of this chapter will attempt to overview key features of the dendritic state that address these and other issues. [Pg.15]

The use of conventional materials or synthetic materials in the construction of devices based on design principles inspired by Nature will also be included in this chapter (biomimetic science). It will be demonstrated that prototype electronic devices constructed with biomaterials obey the same physical laws as do conventional devices. The problem of interfacing biomolecular devices with the outside world will also be addressed. Whenever appropriate, synthetic organic materials and biomaterials are treated as if there were no differences. [Pg.261]

An extension of artificial membranes for ion selective electrochemical work was the construction of biomimetic ion channel sensors [65]. These devices were based on Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of charged lipid membranes onto a glassy carbon electrode. This work indicated that a conductive zone can be opened reversibly by a stimulant-membrane interaction by surface charge alterations. This work has demonstrated how the concept of the conductivity measurement could be extended to the more common and useful technique of cyclic voltammetry. [Pg.245]
