OLS is a simple, yet powerful explicit calibration technique from which the result can be easily interpreted with little ambiguity. However, the requirement that all spectral components be known reduces the application of OLS to quantitative biological spectroscopy. [Pg.337]

There has been tremendous work performed in molecular spectroscopy of biochemical and biological spectroscopy applying resonance Raman scattering. Several aspects have been discussed in detail by experts in the field. Spiro and Loehr (1975) have been one of the first researchers to summarize achievements made in the observation of res-... [Pg.486]

Spectroscopy The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with materials including scattering, absorption, and emission. It does not include chemical effects such as bond formation or free radical formation. It does include some aspects of photochemistry, which is a specialized form of energy transduction. We begin, in Section 2, with a detailed theoretical examination of the physics of quadrupolar, spin-5 nuclei, using the matrix operator formalism to discuss the various NMR experiments used in biological spectroscopy of quadrupolar ions and the biexponential relaxation of these ions. The effect of interaction of the Rb+ ion with its chemical environment on relaxation characteristics of the 87 Rb nucleus is considered in Section 3. Section 4 deals with methods of differentiating between intra- and extracellular species of ions. In Section 5 we discuss the kinetics of Rb+ in a variety of tissues, as studied by 87Rb NMR. Where appropriate, studies of 23Na and 39K are also cited. [Pg.214]
