Biological first application

The duration of collection of biological samples from farm workers is determined by the excretion pattern of the active ingredient or its metabolites. Generally, collection will encompass a period of time prior to exposure to about 1-3 days beyond exposure. Background samples should be taken from workers for the 24 h prior to the first application of the test product. This will allow an up-to-date examination of the background levels of the parent or metabolites in the worker s urine. 

The first application of ANNs to pyrolysis mass spectra from biological samples was by Goodacre, Kell, and Bianchi.96,97 This study permitted the rapid and exquisitely sensitive assessment of the adulteration of extra-virgin olive oils with various seed oils, a task that previously was labor intensive and difficult. Since this study other laboratories have increasingly sought to apply ANNs to the deconvolution and interpretation of pyrolysis mass spectra, the aim being to expand the application of the PyMS technique from microbial characterisation to the rapid and quantitative analysis of the chemical constituents of microbial and other biological samples. 

Another hydrophilic polymer that has received attention is poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). This material holds tremendous promise as a biological drug delivery device because it is nontoxic, hydrophilic and exhibits good mucoadhesive properties (Peppas, 1987). In one of the first applications of this material, Langer and Folkman (1976) investigated the use of copolymers of PHEMA (Hydron ) and PVA as delivery vehicles for polypeptide drugs. 

Mass spectrometry (MS) has changed its appearance in the scientific world considerably during recent years. At the beginning of the 20 century first applications in physics were described. Gradually MS methods entered more and more into the fields of biology, biochemistry and biomedicine and became a major tool in life sciences. Mass spectrometers consist of a sequence of functional units for sample introduction, ion formation, mass separation, and detection. The data handling is carried out by computers. Currently, a variety of different mass spectrometric techniques are used for the analysis of biomolecules (Fig. 6). 

Near-IR sensors are also a topic of increased interest for the analysis of biological materials, from food quality control to bioactivity measurements. First applications... 

The first application on a biological system was performed in the mid-90 s on a gas phase cluster model of the active site of superoxide dismutase [11]. Since then a rapidly increasing number of applications to biological systems have been reported. In this article, we are trying to give an overview of the current status by giving a short outline of the studies that appeared so far in the literature and by presenting selected examples from our own work on enzymatic systems.
