Biological activities of natural products

It is unusual for the biological activity of natural products to be surpassed by synthetic... [Pg.365]

Despite fhe problems, however, some of the natural preparations were effective in relieving fhe symptoms and at times even eliminating the disease. In fact, we know today fhat fhe number of pharmacologically active substances produced by nature is large and fhe spectrum of biological activities of natural products is extraordinarily broad for example, antimicrobial, antineoplastic, CNS-active, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, etc., are only a few of the therapeutic classes of drugs from nature [7]. [Pg.5]

The wide variety and biological activity of natural products containing the Q -methylene-y-butyrolactone feature has created considerable interest in developing syntheses of this functional group. Figure 3.3. Bryostatin 2. Bryostatin 2 (C HggOjg) is a biologically active marine natural product which may have useful anti-cancer properties. It was recently synthesised at Harvard by Professor David Evans and his research group. In this illustration, all of the hydrogen atoms are omitted in order to simplify the structure. The lower diagram shows a low energy conformation of bryostatin 2, but it may only be a local minimum and not a global minimum. Many other conformations are accessible at room temperature. McDonald and coworkers studied a series of tandem endo-selective and stereospecific oxacyclization of polyepoxides by reaction with Lewis acid [92-95]. Polyepoxides, such as 50, can be obtained from the epoxidation of triene 49 with ketone 26 (Scheme 8). This cascade cyclization of polyepoxides provides an efficient method to synthesize substituted polycyclic ether structures, which are present in a number of biologically active marine natural products. [Pg.213]

One way or another, the new techniques of genetic manipulation and analysis will find their way into industrial production of more efficient biologically active novel natural products from filamentous microorganisms. This process is already under way. The major pharmaceutical companies are at the forefront of progress in applying state-of-the-art techniques to strain and product development. [Pg.278]

Since the start of the twentieth century, steroids have continued to be the focus of the research activities of natural product chemists, synthetic chemists, biochemists and clinicians. The reasons are several-fold and related to the fascination of the chemical complexity of sterols and their biochemical functions in living organisms. Sterols and steroids are excellent compounds for the organic chemists to practise their skills upon in the development of new reactions and synthetic procedures. The biological functions of sterols, for example as an essential constituent of membranes, have proved thought-provoking to lipid biochemists. [Pg.702]
