Babko s participation in conferences, symposiums, in lUPAC photos of the scientist during the various periods of a life correspondence with lar ge scientists of the world concer ning development of analytical chemistry as a whole, and in Ukraine. 

Two German physical chemists, W. Sehottky and C. Wagner, founded this branch of materials seience. The story is very clearly set out in a biographical memoir of Carl Wagner (1901 1977) by another pioneer solid-state chemist, Hermann Schmalzried (1991), and also in Wagner s own survey of point defects and their interaction (Wagner 1977) - his last publieation. Sehottky we have already briefly met in connection with the Pohl school s study of colour centres...

A book of scientific articles in celebration of Boas s 75th birthday (Borland et al. 1979) includes a biographical sketch of Boas by J.F. Nicholas. A substantial account of his life can be found in an obituary by Clarebrough and Head (1987). 

Feilden and Hawthorne [3] describe Whittle s early thinking in their excellent biographical memoir on Whittle for the Royal Society. 

Some of the earliest studies of the aldol reaction were carried out by Aleksander Borodin. Though a physician by training and a chemist by profession, Borodin is remembered as the composer of some familiar works in Russian music. See pp. 326-327 in the April 1987 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education for a biographical sketch of Borodin.

To Michael Faraday, science was an obsession one of his biographers described him as a "work maniac." An observer (Faraday had no students) said of him. 

The importance of Heinrich Ritthausen s fundamental studies, 1862 to 1899, on analytical procedures for the determination of amino acids in proteins has been emphasized in the biographical sketches which have been presented by Osborne (210), Vickery (289), and Chibnall (47). It is of particular interest to note here the prediction made by Ritt-hausen about 1870 that the amino acid composition would prove to be the most adequate basis for the characterization of proteins. Ritthausen and Kreusler (230) were the first, in 1871, to determine amino acids derived from proteins, and some of the values which they found for aspartic and glutamic acids are given in Table III (cited by Chibnall, 47, and Vickery, 286).

The selected papers in the present anthology are numbered from SP 1 to SP 144 in the somewhat arbitrary sequence in which they are presented. Throughout the two volumes the selected papers are identified by Selected Paper number , with the prefix SP . The SP designation is used to forestall confusion between the SP numbers used in the main text and the other numbers used in Chapter 18 (the Biographical Memoir) and in the appendices. Appendix I is a conversion table between the SP... 

He took an enduring interest in promoting the welfare and careers of his students and colleagues. The biographical articles that he wrote demonstrate his insight into the personalities of those he knew. A raconteur of note, he had a rich collection of anecdotes about major figures in the carbohydrate world, in particular of Haworth and his stem regime. He was always in demand as a speaker, and his infectious enthusiasm communicated science as effectively to lay audiences as to experts.
