Binders spray drying

Octane additives were composed of 25 wt % zeolite in a silica-alumina binder, spray-dried to conventional FCC catalyst size, and treated at 1450°F in 100% steam at 1 atm for five hours before testing.

Chemical engineers could also work to devise processes to improve the flow characteristics of powders after they are formed. Such research would help control agglomeration of particles in subsequent processing steps as well as facilitate the production of compacted ceramic preforms. For example, gas-solid chemical reactions might be used to tailor the chemical composition of powders. As another example, better methods of componnding powders with binders might be achieved by processes that mix powders with suitable binders in a liquid and then spray dry the resulting suspension. 

In wet granulation experiments, dried Ti02 particles were fed into the cylindrical air distributor (vessel), then the air distributor rotated and fluidization air was supplied. After a predetermined amount of binder liquid was sprayed, drying of products was conducted. 

Spray drying requires formulahon of a relatively stable, usually aqueous dispersion of zeolite and colloidal binder particles, which are then fed to the spray drier [88, 89], Organic dispersing agents may be added to the spray drier feed slurry to stabilize the dispersion while the slurry is fed to the drier. 

Catalysts were prepared using a spray dried slurry of the appropriate zeolite, clay and a proprietary inert binder. 

Achieve a binder solution spray rate that willnotdry while spraying (spray drying) and will not overwet the bed. This rate should also allow the nozzle to atomize the binder solution to the required droplet size.

The first direct compression excipient, spray-dried lactose, was introduced in the early 1960s as a filler specifically designed for direct compression processes. Over many years, more direct compression API and excipients, especially diluents and binders, were developed. Since these are now commercially available, design of direct compression formulations is readily possible.
