The first task of the estimation procedure is to quickly and efficiently screen all possible sets of interaction parameters that could be used. For example if the Trebble-Bishnoi EoS were to be employed which can utilize up to four binary interaction parameters, the number of possible combinations that should be examined is 15. The implicit LS estimation procedure provides the most efficient means to determine the best set of interaction parameters. The best set is the one that results in the smallest value of the LS objective function after convergence of the minimization algorithm has been achieved. Another way to characterize the performance of screening methods for binary classification is the construction of performance curves. A performance characteristic curve (PCC) represents the probability of positive test results vs the concentration of the analyte as shown in Fig. 4.10. 

Chazelviel treated departures from electroneutraltiy in growth from binary solution by dividing the electrolysis cell into zones [40]. In the bulk of the cell he assumed electroneutraltiy, while he allowed departures from electroneutraltiy in a region larger than the Debye screening length. A scale x defines the extent of the transport-induced space charge. 

In a previous publication [8] we described a systematic screening of the binary interactions between 36 polyanions and 40 polycations. As a result of this study it became clear that capsules prepared from simple binary polymer complexes would not be mechanically adequate and multicomponent polymer systems would offer advantages. The most common type of qualitative analysis is related to a binary response, with a presence-absence , yes-no or lower than-greater than answer to a main assumption, as for example is the concentration lower than a threshold value This method is interesting for the detection of unknown pollutants and can be easily carried out with screening procedures coupling real qualitative analysis with semi-quantitative responses. 

In an attempt to find new active ORR catalysts, Liu et al. used a high-throughput method to screen both noble and non-noble metal binary catalysts for ORR in both acidic and methanol-containing media.223 Of the non-noble metal catalysts (CrCo, CrCu, CrFe, CrNi) none were found to be active in H2S04 or H2S04/methanol.
