Binary Ionic Solids Common Structural Types

4 Binary Ionic Solids Common Structural Types [Pg.79]

Among binary (i.e., two-element) ionic compounds, six simple types of unit cell structures are commonly encountered, although many more exist  [Pg.79]

1 1 (MX) types halite (NaCl), cesimn chloride (CsCl), zinc blende (ZnS), [Pg.79]

8 X one-eighth Na at each corner 6 X one-half Na on each face 12 X one-quarter Cl on each edge 1 X a whole CP at the body center of the cube. [Pg.80]

Each unit has a total of four NaCl. This is because, with the exception of the CP at the body center, parts of each ion lie in adjacent unit cells. [Pg.80]

Recent developments in the synthesis, structures, and properties of ionic/covalent ternary nitrides are reviewed. A description, including synthetic conditions, is given of preparative methods reported in the literature. Solid state synthetic reactions from binary nitrides as well as novel synthetic approaches such as amide synthesis and ammonolysis of ternary oxides are described. Examples of common structure types as well as electronic and magnetic properties are discussed. [Pg.90]
