AN ALLOYING EFFECT THE HYDROGENOLYSIS OF C-C BONDS IN ALKANES OVER Ru BIMETALLIC CATALYSTS... 

In the work of the author and his associates on bimetallic catalysts comprising various combinations of Group VIII and Group IB metals, it was discovered that the activity of the Group VIII metal for hydrogenolysis reactions of hydrocarbons was decreased markedly by the presence of the Group IB metal (11-15). It was shown that the inhibition of hydrogenolysis leads to improved selectivity for alkane isomerization reactions (11) and for reactions in which saturated hydrocarbons are converted to aromatic hydrocarbons (12,14,15). Interest in bimetallic catalysts increased markedly with the discovery of this selectivity phenomenon. 

Its reputation for structure-sensitivity has made alkane hydrogenolysis attractive for investigation using bimetallic catalysts, and there is an extensive literature on the subject. Much of it however relates only to the ability of a pair of metals to form and retain bimetallic particles, and adds little to the understanding of reaction mechanisms. Sometimes for example the calcination of two precursor compounds... 

Thus temperature-programmed reduction, EDAX-microprobe analysis and alkane hydrogenolysis all indicate that in the impregnated bimetallic catalyst the Cu and Co phases are in intimate contact this is intriguing given the simple preparative method used. 

The ensemble control plays a role also in catalytic reforming on platinum or bimetallic catalysv. A good catalyst should have low activity for hydrogenolysis resulting in production of lower alkanes, and it should have a slow build-up of carbon overlayers to maintain stable activity for isomerization, dehydrogenation and dehydrocyciiration ...
