Sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHC03 (sodium bicarbonate), is commonly called bicarbonate of soda or baking soda. The rising action of baking soda in batter depends on the reaction of a weak acid, HA, with the hydrogen carbonate ions ... [Pg.711]

E500 sodium hydrogen carbonate (colloquially bicarbonate of soda) (NaHC03). [Pg.63]

Sodium bicarbonate can be made by treating soda ash with carbon dioxide and water. Sodium bicarbonate is called bicarbonate of soda or baking soda. It is also mined from certain ores called nahcolite. [Pg.233]

The bicarbonate of soda used should be as pure as can be obtained, and must, of course, be completely soluble in water. That most suitable is obtained by passing carbonic acid into a strong aqueous solution of crystallised carbonate of soda. [Pg.917]

With the same object in view, Mr. John Wilson obtained a patent in 1840 for a process in which the caustic Boda contained in either black or white ash is oonvorted into carbonate by the application of as much bicarbonate of soda os might be necessary. [Pg.932]

One of the most economical of these processes is that proposed hy Messrs. Hemming and Dyer, which is founded on the behavior of a solution of common salt with one of bicarbonate of ammonia. When carbonate of ammonia of commerce, which is in reality a mixture of carbonate and bicarbonate, is added in a etate of lino powder to a solution of about an equal weight of salt in throe parts of water, tho mixture being well stirred, a white crystalline precipitate appears in a few hours, causing the liquid to become thick. This precipitate is bicarbonate of soda, and there is contained in solution chloride of ammonium, produoed as shown in the annexed equation-... [Pg.932]

Carbonate op Zino.—The preparation of the neutral carbonate of oxide of zino is somewhat difficult, owing to the feeble affinity of the oxide for carbonic aoid. If, however, the precipitate which occurs on adding a solution of bicarbonate of soda or of potassa to a solution of zino bo, after waeliing, disseminated in water, and carbonic aeid oharged Into tho liquor, the precipitate is dissolved in tho form, of a bicarbonate, and on evaporating the liquid in an atmosphere of carbonic aeid, the neutral or monocarbonate of oxide of zino is obtained. Its formula is ZnO, C0S. [Pg.1170]

According to another patent1 a solution of borax containing 13-15 per cent, of carbonate is electrolysed. Presumably, percarbonate is first formed, and this oxidises the borate to perborate. It is necessary to saturate the solution with borax, and solid perborate must also be present. Metallic catalysts which act negatively must be excluded, but stannic acid, bicarbonate of soda and magnesium silicate act as accelerators. [Pg.24]

Sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHC03 (commonly called sodium bicarbonate, or bicarbonate of soda), is commonly used in baked goods. It dissolves in water to form an alkaline solution. [Pg.405]

For the raw water of Example 10.8, using the lime-soda process in the spht treatment mode to remove the total hardness to 130 mg/L as CaC03 containing magnesium hardness of 40 mg/L as CaCO, calculate the total mass of calcium carbonate solids precipitated from the removal of the magnesium bicarbonate of the carbonate hardness of magnesium. [Pg.524]

Sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda, bicarbonate of soda), NaHCOg, is a white substance usually available as a powder. It is used in cooking, in medicine, and in the manufacture of baking powder. [Pg.185]

The label on a container of double-acting baking powder tells us that it contains cornstarch, bicarbonate of soda (also called sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHC03), sodium aluminum sulfate, and acid phosphate of calcium (which chemists call calcium dihydrogen phosphate, Ca(H2P04)2). Classify each of the following as a pure substance or a mixture. If it is a pure substance, is it an element or a compound ... [Pg.73]

Bicarbonate of Soda. This may be prepared from a solution of carbonate of soda treated in the same manner as for bicarbonate of potassa. (See Mo. 4183.) The XJ. S. Pharmacopoeia directs carbonate of soda iu small pieces to bo enclosed in a box (having on air-tight lid, and an inner bottom perforated with holes), and thus subjected, until saturated, to a stream of carbonic acid gas previously passed through water. [Pg.266]
