The reports indicate the presence of terpenes, a-pinene, camphene, citral and beta-caryophyllene in the essential oil from the leaves and flavonoids such as casticin, orientin, isoorientin, luteolin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, corymbosin, gardenins A and B, 3-O-desmethylartemetin, 5-0-desmethylnobiletin, 3, 4, 5,5, 6,7,8-heptamethoxyflavone, 3, 5-dihydroxy-4, 7,8-trimethoxyflavanone and 3, 5-dihydroxy-4, 6,7-trimethoxy... [Pg.281]

The hydrocarbon component, between 6.5% and 12.4%, showed differences in both quality and quantity in correlation with the level of alpha-phellandrene, prevalent in the oil obtained from the first two samples, and with the sesquiterpenic hydrocarbons (beta-caryophyllene and germacrene D) prevalent in remaining samples. The epoxide component was characterized by a prevalence of 1, 8 cineole in a concentration of between 6.4 and 8.2 % in samples containing flowering leaves but was significantly lower in the others (about 1 %). [Pg.409]

Corn root worm larvae feed on root hairs and bore into maize roots. Left unchecked, the plants take up less water and nntrients and collapse. Corn plants, however, emit a chemical. E-beta caryophyllene, when attacked by the root worm. This, in turn, attracts beneficial insect-killing nematodes to control the root worm popnlation (Glover, 2009). Feedback loops snch as this one. [Pg.399]

Beta-caryophyllene has been detected as one of the most abundant terpenes in P. caribaea by spectrometric methods [133]. This sesquiterpene has long been used in the perfume and cosmetics industry. Recently, using biotechnological approaches, phototrophic organisms have been genetically transformed to produce p-caryophyllene to be used by the biofuel industry [180]. [Pg.4051]
