Liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) are best thought of as being a separate, unique class of TPs. Their molecules are stiff, rodlike... [Pg.343]

This reagent is perhaps best thought of as a higher-order mixed cuprate of the type (R3Si)2Cu(CN)Li2 (7). [Pg.121]

The curvature sensor first proposed by Roddier (Roddier, 1988), does not make measurements at the focal plane. Instead measurements are taken at two planes symmetrically distributed around the focal plane as shown in Fig. 10. These measurements are best thought of as blurred images of the aperture and consequently our ability to measure the tilt is affected since as we move from the focal plane the hght is spread over a wider angle. Consequently we would expect the tilt signal to degrade as we move away from the aperture. This can be formalized by the CRLB and Fig. 11 shows the best attainable tilt performance (Marcos, 2002). [Pg.393]

Once you realize that attributes do not directly represent stored information, the unconventional concept of a parameterized attribute is a natural extension. A parameterized attribute is one that has a defined value for each of many different possible values of its parameter(s). Like attributes generally, it is best thought of as a query, or read-only, function that has been hypothesized for some purpose it need not be directly implemented. [Pg.85]

It is now time to define some terms. The exchange current (/o) is best thought of as the rate constant of electron transfer at zero overpotential. This current is commonly expressed as a form of current density, Iq/A (cf. equation (1.1)), in which case it is called the exchange current density, io- (Incidentally, this also explains why the Butler-Volmer equation does not include an area term. This follows since both / et and /q are functions of area, thus causing the two area terms to cancel out.)... [Pg.228]

These terms are frequently used and may lead to confusion, if used in the wrong context. As a reminder, the valency of an atom is strictly the number of bonds (including o, n and 8) in which it participates in any particular compound. In IF , the iodine atom participates in seven a bonds to the fluorine atoms. The fluorine atoms are individually monovalent. Oxidation states are more useful than valency in describing ionic compounds. In the crystalline solid CaF0, the calcium is best thought of as composed of calcium dications and fluoride anions, Ca2+(F ),. The calcium is in its +2 oxidation state, having lost its valency electrons, and the fluorine atoms are in the -1 oxidation state, both having accepted an elec-... [Pg.89]

Asthma is best thought of as a disease in two time domains. In the present domain, it is important for the distress it causes—cough, nocturnal awakenings, and shortness of breath that interferes with the ability to exercise or to pursue desired activities. For mild asthma, occasional inhalation of a bronchodilator may be all that is needed. For more severe asthma, treatment with a long-term controller, like an inhaled corticosteroid, is necessary to prevent symptoms and restore function. The second domain of asthma is the risk it presents of future events, such as exacerbations, or of progressive loss of pulmonary function. A patient s satisfaction with his or her ability to control symptoms and maintain function by frequent use of an inhaled 32 agonist does not mean that the risk of future events is also controlled. In fact, use of two or more canisters of an inhaled 3 agonist per month is a marker of increased risk of asthma fatality. [Pg.440]

Tack is best thought of as the ability of two pieces of rubber to stick when pressed together and is sometimes called auto adhesion. Therefore, it is not quite the same as stickiness or adhesion, which generally involves sticking or adhering to a second material. High tack can be a nuisance when handling sheets of rubber but is very important in the manufacture of articles built up from separate pieces of uncured compound. [Pg.88]

The NK, p-spin and other models described above all assign fitnesses directly to sequences. In contrast, the secondary structure landscapes are best thought of in two parts ... [Pg.133]
