Acid Curing. Urea-formaldehyde resins and resol-phenol-formaldehyde resins can be acid-cured by wastes from the production of maleic anhydride [1902]. The waste from the production of maleic anhydride contains up to 50% maleic anhydride, in addition to phthalic anhydride, citraconic anhydride, benzoic acid, o-tolulic acid, and phthalide. The plugging solution is prepared by mixing a urea-formaldehyde resin with a phenol-formaldehyde resin, adding the waste from production of maleic anhydride, and mixing thoroughly.

The deuterium content can be determined by reaction of the deuterated diazomethane with benzoic acid-O d in anhydrous ether followed by analysis of methyl benzoate for deuterium content either by n.m.r. spectrometry or by mass spectrometry. The benzoic acid-O-d is prepared by heating a mixture of 48.6 g. (0.216 mole) of benzoic anhydride (obtained from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc.), 0.10 g. (0.0009 mole) of anhydrous sodium carbonate, and 7.0 g. (0.35 mole) of deuterium oxide to 90° for 2 hours. The resulting mixture is distilled at atmospheric pressure in a short-path still fitted with a receiver protected from atmospheric moisture by a drying tube. The distinction between these two types of electrolytes is not sharply defined because electrolytes with a medium degree of dissociation are known (e. g. aqueous solutions of cyanoacetic acid, o-ch lor benzoic acid, o-nitrobenzoic acid, 3—5 di-nitrobcnzoic acid etc .). As the number of such electrolytes is comparatively small, no special account will be taken of them. Analogically all nonaqueous solutions can be omitted as in technical electrochemistry water is exclusively used in the preparation of solutions of electrolytes.

Although p-hydroxybenzoic acid is less acidic than benzoic acid, o-hydroxybenzoic acid is slightly more acidic than benzoic acid. Explain this result.
