The second route [91] was developed by Baldwin and used aminoacid derivatives as chiral precursors. Hydroxybenzoic and vanillic acids are also present in numerous fruits and vegetables [1], and the native forms are frequently simple combinations with glucose (Table 1). Other derivatives have been detected in certain fruits [1,2] the methyl ester of />-hydroxybenzoic acid in passion fruit, 3,4-dihydrox-ybenzoic aldehyde in banana, a phenylpropene benzoic acid derivative in fruits of Jamaican Piper species, and benzoyl esters and other derivatives in the fruits of Aniba riparia. Different new glycosides of HBA showing radical-scavenging activity [e.g., a new guaiacylglycerol-vanillic acid ether (Fig. 1)] have been identified in the fruits of Boreava orientalis [20]. [Pg.21]

Keto-esters.— The synthesis of benzoylformates from benzoic acids via the benzoyl cyanide is usually not practical owing to hydrolysis of the latter back to the starting acid. It has now been found that treatment of the benzoyl nitriles with 85% sulphuric acid containing sodium bromide followed by the addition of methanol gives the desired methyl benzoylformates in excellent yields. [Pg.127]

Benzoyl chloride and benzoic anhydride, by heating with excess chlorosulfonic acid followed by addition of the crude reaction mixture to crushed ice, both afforded 3-chlorosulfonylbenzoic acid. These carboxylic acid derivatives (acid chlorides and anhydrides) are easily hydrolysed to the carboxylic acid group in the work-up procedure, so they behave similffl ly to the parent arylcarboxylic acid. On the other hand, arylcarboxylic acid esters may be chlorosulfonated without loss of the ester group thus methyl-1-naphthalenecarboxylate 297 by treatment with excess chlorosulfonic acid gave the corresponding 5-sulfonyl chloride 298 (Equation 92). Similar results were reported in the chlorosulfonation of ethyl chlorophenoxyacetates in which the ester grouping was retained. [Pg.94]
