Benzoate esters migration

The benzoate ester is one of the more common esters used to protect alcohols. Benzoates are less readily hydrolyzed than acetates, and the tendency for benzoate migration to adjacent hydroxyls, in contrast to acetates, is not nearly as strong. Benzoates can be forced to migrate to a thermodynamically more stable position. ... [Pg.100]

Benzoyl peroxide introduces a benzoyl unit mainly ortho to an existing hydroxyl (equation 35), but para products can be formed by [3,3] migration of the acyloxy group around the ring periphery of the dienone intermediate . The benzoate esters can easily be hydrolysed to the corresponding phenols. [Pg.406]

Benzoate esters are well known plasticisers used in latex caulks. New benzoate plasticisers to answer current needs for a globally available, environmentally acceptable, high performance plasticiser have been designed and developed. One of these new plasticisers has been specifically developed for the caulk industry. The demonstration data developed indicates that Benzoflex 2088 is compatible with common caulk polymers, is more efficient, imparts excellent adhesion and provides low plasticiser migration from caulk to paint characteristics. These plasticisers are the first of a series of new benzoates being developed for a variety of applications. 5 refs. USA... [Pg.107]

Plasticizers. Plasticizers are materials that soften and flexibilize inherently rigid, and even britde polymers. Organic esters are widely used as plasticizers in polymers (97,98). These esters include the benzoats, phthalates, terephthalates, and trimeUitates, and aUphatic dibasic acid esters. Eor example, triethylene glycol bis(2-ethylbutyrate) [95-08-9] is a plasticizer for poly(vinyl butyral) [63148-65-2] which is used in laminated safety glass (see Vinyl POLYMERS, poly(vinyl acetals)). Di(2-ethyUiexyl)phthalate [117-81-7] (DOP) is a preeminent plasticizer. Variation of acid and/or alcohol component(s) modifies the efficacy of the resultant ester as a plasticizer. In phthalate plasticizers, molecular sizes of the alcohol moiety can be varied from methyl to tridecyl to control permanence, compatibiUty, and efficiency branched (eg, 2-ethylhexyl, isodecyl) for rapid absorption and fusion linear (C6—Cll) for low temperature flexibiUty and low volatility and aromatic (benzyl) for solvating. Terephthalates are recognized for their migration resistance, and trimeUitates for their low volatility in plasticizer appHcations. [Pg.396]

In summary, it may be stated that the reaction of acyl esters of aldoses and aldobioses (see Section III, p. 92) with ammonia consists of a set of competitive pathways, including intramolecular O —> N migrations of acyl groups, deacylations, and transesterifications, with formation of aldose amides and variable proportions of the free sugar as the principal products. Significant proportions of basic or insoluble polymeric substances were not observed with aldose acetates or benzoates, although occurrence of extensive browning indicates the probable formation of soluble melanoidins. [Pg.89]
