In the case of the benzyloxytrityl-hydroxylamineresin 24b, the starting material is the Merrifield resin, chloromethylated polystyrene (1.7 mmol Cl x g 1) which is treated with 3 equiv. of 4-hydroxy-methyl benzoate in DMA with sodium methylate as base. The Beilstein test is used for monitoring and microanalyses showed the absence of chloride (Scheme 6).

Several solid supports have been employed for the attachment of o-iodosobenzoic acid, including silica gel, titania and nylon [89]. Two polymer-supported o-iodoxybenzoic acid reagents have recently been reported. The first was obtained by attaching a carboxymethyloxy derivative of f-butyl o-iodo-benzoate to an aminopropylated silica gel and oxidation with oxone [90]. The second involved chloromethylated polystyrene which was coupled with methyl 5-hydroxy-2-iodobenzoate and eventually oxidized by Bu4NS05H/MeS03H [91]. Some of these polymeric reagents appear in Scheme 31. 

The 2-allyloxy-4-chloromethyl benzoate obtained under (b) above is saponified under the usual conditions on for obtaining the corresponding acid, and the corresponding acid is obtained in a yield of 91%, the acid melting at 87°C. 

A complete product study was reported on the reaction of bis(chloro-methyl) ether with a-bromoisobutyrate in the presence of zinc (557). The reaction of chloromethyl benzoate with a Reformatsky reagent RCH-(ZnBr)COOR gives PhC(OH)(OCH2CHRCOOR )(CHRCOOR ) (296). 

The a-chloro-a-sultinyl ketone 20 was prepared from methyl benzoate and chloromethyl phenyl sulfoxide 19 after in situ a-lithiation. Compound 20 is dimetallated by KH and f-BuLi to give the keto dianion 21, which is converted into a potassium/lithium ynolate 22 (equation 7). The resulting metal ynolates are converted into thioesters, carboxylic acids, amides and esters (Section V). 

To expedite the synthesis of densely packed dendrons, Percec and co-workers110 have utilized the triply branched monomer 37, methyl 3,4,5-trihydroxy-benzoate.84-85 111-113 The materials were synthesized by coupling the phenolic groups of the monomer to 3 equiv of a benzylic chloride, followed by transformation of the focal ester functionality to a chloromethyl group, via LiAlFF reduction and SOCT chlorination. This procedure could be repeated up to the fourth generation.

To summarize, in several differing ways described above, functions like chloromethyl-, hydroxymethyl-, aminomethyl-, carboxymethyl-, bromoacetyl-, phenolic hydroxyl- and benzoate are mainly introduced into supports based on cross-linked polystyrenes.
