1.2- Benzisothiazol-3 -one 1,1-dioxide

Synthesis of 1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-ones (1,1-dioxides).-from 2-(methylsulphinyl)benzaniides or N-t2-(methylthio)benzovl]-N-alkylhvdroxylamines and SOCl. Compounds (28 R=alkyl,cycloalkyl, benzyl,Ph,Ar) or (29 R=alkyl) react with SOClg to give 2-substituted 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-ones (30) nearly quantitatively. Thermolysis of l,2-benzisothiazol-3-one 1,1-dioxide (saccharin) in boiling diethyl phthalate (b.p. 298 C) produces 5% yields of (93), the formation of which is rationalized by postulating the intermediate formation of ben-zoazetidinone (94), ... 

Chiral A-substitutcd benzisothiazole-3-one-1,1-dioxide (saccharin) derivatives 258 are synthesized via the direct ortho-lithiation of 3-A-arylsulfonyloxazolidine-2-ones 257 using LDA and HMPA <06TL6405>. Compounds 257 are readily prepared from (X)-amino acids. 

The preparation of all four mononitro aromatic derivatives of 1,2-benzisothiazol-3-one S,S-dioxide was reported. As an example, the preparation of the 5-nitrosaccharin 314 Method 0) from nitro-lH-benzo[d][l,3] oxazine-2,4-dione 312 is outlined in the Scheme 76. Starting from 312, which was treated with K2CO3 in MeOH, the methyl 2-amino-5-nitrobenzoate 313 was formed. The amino group was transformed into the diazonium salt (NaN02 in AcOH/HCl). Its reaction with CuCh and sulphur dioxide afforded the corresponding sulfonyl chloride, which was added to cold concentrated ammonium hydroxide and 314 was isolated in 74% yield [lOOj.
