Cancer is a type of neoplasm or tumor. While technically a tumor is defined as only a tissue swelling, it is now used as a synonym for a neoplasm. A neoplasm is an abnormal mass of tissue, the growth of which exceeds and is uncoordinated with the normal tissue, and persists after cessation of the stimuli which evoked it. This metric is an attempt to define yield in terms of the mass of the product that is made from non-toxic materials. This was one of the first times that reagent and reactant toxicity were included as an important part of determining what is considered to be green, and it is something that was absent from traditional yield measures.
